“I want you to act as if the house is on fire, because it is.”

Dear friends, colleagues and supporters,

Our team are listening to the words above from Greta Thunberg, as we head towards our 28th Christmas at WILD Young Parents Project.

We now have another four years of a government whose policies gained this response from the United Nations:

“Although the United Kingdom is the world’s fifth largest economy, one fifth of its population live in poverty, and 1.5 million of them experienced destitution in 2017. Policies of austerity introduced in 2010 continue largely unabated, despite the tragic social consequences. Close to 40 per cent of children are predicted to be living in poverty by 2021. Food banks have proliferated; homelessness and rough sleeping have increased greatly; life expectancy is falling for certain groups; and the legal aid system has been decimated”

Most years at Christmas it is enough to thank you all for your co-working, shared values and the outstanding support you offer us and the families whom we serve. Indeed, this has been our best year yet for brilliant, creative, ambitious partnerships.

This year though, we are asking you for more. Let’s go further than doing a good job with few resources, because, as the government’s own committee states:

'Improvements in service provision will only provide a ‘sticking plaster’ if the circumstances in which some of this country’s poorest children grow up do not improve” (UK Govt H&SC Select Committee 2019)

Let’s work together next year; not only in our daily jobs, but working with young people as campaigning allies for a better future for our most vulnerable families.

Watch out for our 2020 Campaign #BelieveInUs, and have a wonderful break.

Jo Davies
